Approximately 40 people are missing after a migrant boat overturned near the Italian island of Lampedusa, according to the United Nations.
The incident occurred on Thursday, and among those missing is a newborn baby.
The boat, carrying 46 migrants from Cameroon, Burkina Faso, and Ivory Coast, departed from Sfax in Tunisia.
It capsized due to strong winds and high waves. Survivors were taken to Lampedusa, while others were returned to Tunisia.
The UNHCR representative to Italy expressed concern about the ongoing loss of lives at Europe’s doorstep and the increasing number of sub-Saharan African migrants arriving through Tunisia.
