Trial commences for three minors accused of killing N1m valued peacock

Three minors appeared before the Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday, facing charges of killing a peacock.

The defendants, whose addresses were withheld, were accused of malicious damage.

The Prosecution Counsel, Inspector Olubu Apata, informed the court that the incident occurred on June 11 in Usi-Ekiti.

Apata claimed that the defendants unlawfully slaughtered a peacock valued at N1 million, belonging to Agbetuyi, with the intention of stealing it.

The prosecutor cited Sections 421 and 306 of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2021, as the provisions contravened by the defendants’ actions.

Requesting an adjournment, Apata expressed his need to review the case file and present his witnesses. The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty.

In defense of the minors, their counsel, Mr. Eric Omotoso, implored the court to grant them bail. Chief Magistrate Mrs.

Kehinde Awosika decided to admit the defendants to bail, setting it at N50,000 each, along with one surety each who must provide an equivalent amount.

The case was adjourned until July 17 for the commencement of the hearing.
