Russian military used children as human shields, resulting in 136 deaths – UN

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres accuses Russia of killing 136 children in Ukraine in 2022, according to a report submitted to the UN Security Council.

The report also claims that Russian armed forces and affiliated groups injured 518 children, launched 480 attacks on schools and hospitals, and used 91 children as human shields.

However, Russia denies targeting civilians since its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. On the other hand, the report states that Ukrainian armed forces killed 80 children, injured 175 children, and conducted 212 attacks on schools and hospitals.

Guterres expresses shock and concern over the high number of children killed, injured, and targeted by Russian and Ukrainian armed forces.

The annual report on children and armed conflict was prepared by Virginia Gamba, the UN Secretary-General’s special representative.

The report also highlights the International Criminal Court’s charges against Russia’s envoy for children’s rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, and the arrest warrant issued against Russian President Vladimir Putin for alleged war crimes related to the conflict in Ukraine.
