NLC calls on FG to postpone electricity tariff hike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for the postponement of the planned increase in electricity tariffs, set for July 1, in order to protect the collective well-being and safety of Nigerians.

NLC President, Mr. Joe Ajaero, emphasized that the proposed 40% tariff hike would further exacerbate the existing hardships faced by ordinary citizens.

Ajaero stated that the justifications provided, such as the increase in fuel prices, inflation, and exchange rates, were insufficient grounds for such a significant tariff increase.

He highlighted the importance of affordability and the quality of service in electricity provision, noting that service providers have yet to meet the minimum threshold of 5,000 megawatts.

Ajaero called on those advocating for the tariff hike to reconsider the impact on the majority of Nigerians and suggested alternative measures to mitigate its effects.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has urged improved labor administration implementation as a prompt response to the ongoing economic crisis.
