A suspect, Okwo Mark, has been sentenced by a Federal Capital Territory High Court to three months in prison for impersonating an American citizen, Stella Coleman, who works as an FBI agent.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Mark for the crime, and he pleaded guilty while requesting leniency from the court.
Justice Aliyu Shafa delivered the judgment, sentencing Mark to three months imprisonment or a fine of N50,000.
The judge also ordered Mark to clean the EFCC office under supervision for four hours each day.
The court further ruled that the phone used in the crime should be destroyed and evidence of its destruction presented.
The proceeds from the crime, amounting to $500, are to be returned to the victim, and the receipt should be provided to the court as evidence.
Mark expressed remorse and promised not to engage in such activities again, while the defense counsel appealed for mercy, highlighting the convict’s young age and lack of previous criminal record.
The EFCC counsel requested forfeiture of the instrument used in the crime and the return of the proceeds.
