Workers’ group urges Nigerian government to establish N200k as minimum wage

The Workers’ Alliance for Inclusive Socio-economic Reforms (WAISER) has urged the Nigerian federal government to establish a new monthly minimum wage of N200,000.

In a statement, Amodu Isiaka, the national coordinator of the group, emphasized that this adjustment would help alleviate the impact of the recent removal of petrol subsidies on Nigerians.

Following President Tinubu’s announcement that the subsidy was discontinued, the country witnessed long queues at petrol stations and a surge in fuel prices nationwide.

The policy has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians, prompting discussions between the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the government to address its consequences.

WAISER argued that the current national minimum wage of N30,000 is no longer sustainable and proposed an increase of about 500% to N200,000 per month.

The group suggested dedicating two work-free days a week to e-governance in order to reduce costs, improve productivity, and align with existing government initiatives.
