According to the New York Post, the tourist submersible named Titan, which went missing during a trip to the Titanic shipwreck at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, is believed to have run out of oxygen.
OceanGate Expeditions, the operator of the sub, informed the Coast Guard that it had only 96 hours of oxygen, with the supply expected to run out on June 22 at around 7:08 a.m.
The fate of the five passengers on board, including OceanGate’s CEO Stockton Rush, remains unclear as US and Canadian authorities continue their search efforts.
A remote-operated vehicle has been deployed, and the French vessel L’Atalante is preparing its ROV for search operations.
Panic among the passengers may have contributed to the oxygen supply depletion.
Experts warn of the potential for carbon dioxide poisoning if the sub’s filtration system was damaged or lost power.
