Nigerian filmmaker Ogo Okpue takes home best director award in the U.S.

UK-based Nigerian filmmaker Ogo Okpue has been awarded the Best Director title, along with Bryan Keith Montgomery Jnr., at the 2023 American Black Film Festival (ABFF) for his film “A Song From The Dark.”

Okpue expressed his excitement, stating that this achievement is another significant milestone for the Nigerian entertainment industry.

The ABFF, known as the largest black film festival globally, aims to showcase audio-visual works of black origin.

Okpue’s previous short films, including “Saving Cain” and “Cat Face,” have received recognition and screenings at renowned film festivals worldwide.

Reflecting on his inspiration for the film, Okpue mentioned his grandmother, who was a respected traditionalist.

“A Song From The Dark” delves into the realm of African mysticism, an aspect he believes has been underexplored in world cinema.

The film, which also received the Best Actor award, features notable Nollywood and Ghanaian actors, and it garnered multiple nominations at the 2022 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA).
