Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate during the February 25 presidential election, has expressed his belief that Nigeria can benefit from the increasing number of Nigerians emigrating to other countries in search of better opportunities.
This phenomenon, popularly known as ‘Japa,’ refers to the act of fleeing from problems or troubles.
Obi’s stance was supported by Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist, Bill Gates, who stated that the ‘japa’ syndrome is actually beneficial for Nigeria.
Gates emphasized that having a significant number of professionals leaving the country can be advantageous if the government increases training efforts and leverages the skills and resources brought back by the diaspora.
Obi concurred with Gates’ perspective and highlighted that the brain drain experienced by Nigeria today can be transformed into brain gain in the future.
He drew parallels with countries like China, India, and Ireland, where the knowledge and resources of their diaspora have played a crucial role in their development and success.
