Lagos has been ranked as the fourth worst city to live in the world, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability report for 2023.
The survey assessed 173 cities based on 30 factors across five categories, including stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.
Lagos fared better than Algiers, Tripoli, and Damascus, but still struggled due to corruption.
The report noted that Lagos had shown some improvements in healthcare and education compared to the previous year, but corruption remained a significant concern.
Despite its low ranking, the report acknowledged that cities like Lagos and Algiers had made progress, benefiting from higher global oil and gas prices as energy exporters.
The decline in COVID-19 cases also allowed for additional public funding, benefiting infrastructure and public services in Lagos.
On the other hand, Vienna and Copenhagen maintained their positions as the top two most liveable cities globally, thanks to their stability, infrastructure, education, healthcare, and cultural offerings.
Melbourne, Sydney, and Vancouver secured the third, fourth, and fifth spots, respectively, among the most liveable cities in the world.
