FG plans to introduce new anti cancer vaccine – NPHCDA

During a quarterly review meeting in Awka, Dr. Faisal Shuaib, the Executive Director and CEO of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), revealed the Federal Government’s plan to introduce a new anti-cancer vaccine called the Human PapillomaVirus (HPV) vaccine into the national immunization schedule in 2023 and 2024.

The aim is to address the rising prevalence of cervical, anal, and oropharyngeal cancers.

Dr. Shuaib emphasized that HPV is a common infection that can lead to various health issues, including the aforementioned cancers.

He highlighted that the impact of HPV-related diseases extends beyond the physical aspects and also affects individuals and families emotionally.

The engagement with the South-East Traditional Rulers Committee on primary healthcare delivery was part of the efforts to strengthen primary healthcare facilities and enhance reproductive, maternal, child, and adolescent health services in the region.

Dr. Bassey Okposen Bassey, the Director of Disease Control and Immunization, represented Dr. Shuaib at the event.

The meeting aimed to ensure effective primary healthcare delivery by providing technical support and promoting health initiatives.

Dr. Shuaib stressed the importance of traditional rulers in primary healthcare engagements and encouraged them to continue championing the cause in their communities.

Dr. Shuaib mentioned the recent launch of the Community-Based Health Research Innovative-Training and Service Programme, which aims to optimize human resources for health, reduce maternal and newborn mortality rates, and enhance the capacity of primary healthcare facilities.

He also urged the traditional rulers to support immunization activities, create awareness, and mobilize communities. Their influence and credibility can inspire positive health-seeking behavior and promote preventive measures.

The Anambra State deputy governor, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, representing Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, highlighted the state government’s commitment to developing the healthcare system.

The event was attended by traditional rulers from the South-East states, as well as key stakeholders in the health sector.

Dr. Walter Mulambo, the Country Representative of the World Health Organization, emphasized the need to sustain the polio-free status in the South-East and Nigeria as a whole.
