US imposes visa restrictions on Uganda government officials over anti-LGBTQ law

The United States has taken action against the Ugandan government by imposing visa restrictions on its officials following the passing of an anti-LGBTQ law that has received widespread condemnation.

Enacted in May, the law includes severe punishments such as the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality” and life imprisonment for same-sex intercourse.

It also imposes fines on media outlets and non-governmental organizations that promote LGBTQ activities.

The Western world, including the United States, expressed immediate disapproval of the law, which put Uganda’s foreign aid at risk.

President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken had previously threatened aid cuts and visa restrictions.

The US State Department stated its commitment to holding those responsible for human rights abuses, particularly against LGBTQI+ individuals, accountable.

The updated travel guidance for US citizens highlights the risks faced by LGBTQI+ individuals in Uganda, including prosecution and harsh penalties.
