A fatal road accident on the Ibadan-Oyo Expressway in Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State claimed the lives of at least six individuals, while 14 others sustained various injuries.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver of a white Toyota Hummer bus, carrying 18 passengers and bearing the registration plate Lagos JJJ 941 XA, was traveling at high speed after departing from Akinyele market in Akinyele Local Government, Ibadan.
The bus experienced a tire burst, causing the driver to lose control. All the passengers, who were males en route to the northern part of the country, were affected by the accident.
Four individuals had already passed away before the arrival of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) members, who quickly transported the injured victims to the state General Hospital in Oyo.
The unit commander of the Atiba Unit Command of FRSC, Bayode Olugbesan, confirmed that overloading and speeding were the primary factors contributing to the accident.
He emphasized the importance of responsible driving, urging motorists to exercise caution, avoid speeding, overloading, and night travel.
A senior medical professional at the state hospital in Oyo disclosed that 15 injured victims were brought to the facility by road safety officials, but unfortunately, two of them could not be saved despite receiving initial medical assistance.
