The negotiations for the minimum wage between organized labor, the Nigerian Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), and the Federal Government are set to resume in the last quarter of this year.
Emmanuel Ugboaja, the General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), made this announcement during the ongoing International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.
He clarified that the discussions would not include raising the national wage floor, which is due in February next year.
Ugboaja emphasized the need for labor to present its proposal for the new national wage by the end of this year to reach a mutual understanding.
He also criticized governors for undermining the national minimum wage and urged them to prioritize fair payment for workers’ services.
The Oyo State NLC chapter expressed skepticism regarding the Federal Government’s plan to remove fuel subsidy.
During a seminar organized by the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER) in Ibadan, the state NLC chairman, Kayode Martins, highlighted concerns about the implementation and past unfulfilled promises.
