Suspended CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, Takes Legal Action for Freedom: Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, has initiated steps to secure his release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) while awaiting a final decision.
A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory granted Emefiele an order directing the DSS Director-General, Yusuf Bichi, to grant him access to his lawyers and family members.
Emefiele was arrested by the DSS a day after his suspension by President Bola Tinubu.
He is being interrogated on allegations of terrorism financing, economic sabotage, mismanagement of forex, and the naira redesign policy.
The court order affirmed Emefiele’s constitutional right to legal and familial access.
The DSS had obtained an ex parte order to extend Emefiele’s detention beyond the stipulated 48 hours, purportedly to prevent him from filing lawsuits asserting his fundamental human rights.
Emefiele’s passport has been confiscated, and his residence and office may be searched as part of the investigation.
The suspended Chairman of the EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa, is also reportedly under investigation by the DSS for alleged misappropriation of seized assets and other issues.
