The National Population Commission (NPC) has announced that the decision regarding the date for the 2023 National Population and Housing Census lies solely with President Ahmed Bola Tinubu.
Hon. Ejike Eze, the Federal Commissioner of the NPC for Enugu State, addressed media executives during a breakfast meeting to discuss the upcoming census.
He reassured everyone that there are no concerns about the new administration discontinuing the census exercise.
Eze emphasized that President Tinubu, being an accountant and technocrat, recognizes the significance of census data in national planning, policy formulation, budgeting, and other aspects.
He also highlighted that the NPC accepted the previous administration’s decision to postpone the census to allow the new administration to contribute to the process.
Eze revealed that this delay provided an opportunity for the commission to refine its processes and systems for conducting the first-ever digital National Population and Housing Census in Nigeria.
The NPC has already completed preparatory activities such as Enumeration Area Demarcation, pre-tests, training of census field staff, procurement of Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), establishment of ICT infrastructure, and logistics support.
