In Lokoja, Kogi State, a middle-aged man named Alfa Olukuluku Kabiru was fatally electrocuted while attempting to vandalize an electricity transformer on Camp Road.
The incident occurred on June 15, 2023. Following the incident, the police and officials from the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) removed the victim’s body from the scene and placed it in a local mortuary.
Engr. Michael Eneromi, the Lokoja Area Officer of AEDC, commented on the incident, stating that the transformer had been targeted multiple times in the past.
He revealed that the recent vandalism, resulting in the unidentified individual’s electrocution, was the fifth occurrence.
Eneromi mentioned that just the previous week, the transformer had been repaired after a community report of vandalism.
He added that the AEDC had recently requested approximately N1.9 million to fix the transformer following another report of vandalism.
Engr. Michael expressed relief that the recent incident exonerated AEDC staff from false accusations of involvement in the vandalization of electricity infrastructure.
He emphasized that in his 20 years of working with NEPA and AEDC, there had never been incidents of vandalism committed by their staff.
He attributed such acts to mischief-makers in the area.
The State Police Command spokesperson, SP William Aya, confirmed the incident, stating that the unidentified man was discovered at the transformer site in Paparanda Square, Lokoja, and was subsequently pronounced dead at the Federal Medical Centre.
The police took custody of the body and deposited it in the hospital.
