Kwara state govt distribute 1,000 life jackets to local government

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, Nigeria, visited Patigi to express condolences to the families affected by a tragic boat accident that claimed the lives of dozens of people.

He was accompanied by Senator Sadiq Umar and other officials. The governor announced that the state government would provide 1,000 life jackets to the local government in order to prevent future accidents of this nature.

The accident resulted in the deaths of at least 106 individuals, predominantly from Patigi communities, while 144 people survived.

Governor AbdulRazaq expressed deep sadness over the incident and emphasized the need for safety measures.

He mentioned plans to enforce safety codes, establish statewide standard operating procedures for water travel, and propose legislation to punish violators of safety protocols.

The government also intends to create a regulatory body to oversee water transportation in the state, in addition to the existing oversight by the National Inland Water Authority (NIWA).
