Abuja-based sex therapist arraigned for alleged N275m internet scam

Cecilia Agu, a sex therapist based in Abuja, was brought before a Federal High Court in Lagos State on Tuesday, facing charges related to an alleged internet scam amounting to N275 million.

The defendant is accused of conspiracy, forgery, fraud, and obtaining by false pretense.

According to the police prosecutor, Samuel Eredia, Agu and accomplices committed the offense on February 20, 2023, in the Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos State.

It is alleged that Agu defrauded Babatunde Oyebode of N275 million by falsely representing herself through electronic messages, promising to assist him in verifying and authenticating his Instagram page with celebrities and clients, which she failed to do.

During the court proceedings, Agu pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against her.

The prosecutor requested that she be remanded in a correctional center, while the defendant’s counsel, Elvis Asia, informed the court of his intention to seek bail on her behalf.

Justice Daniel Osiagor granted Agu bail in the sum of N10 million, with two sureties who must meet specific conditions.

However, until the bail conditions are fulfilled, the defendant will remain in the correctional center. The trial is scheduled to commence on October 18.
