Ibrahim Babangida criticizes Nigerian politicians for failing to capitalize on the gains of June 12

Ibrahim Babangida, a former military Head of State in Nigeria, has expressed disappointment in Nigerian politicians for failing to benefit from the gains of the June 12, 1993 election.

This election was widely regarded as the freest and fairest in the country’s history. Babangida emphasized that politicians have disregarded the positive aspects of this significant event, such as credible elections.

He highlighted the unity that was displayed during that election, where Nigerians from different cultural, traditional, and religious backgrounds came out in large numbers to choose their leaders.

However, Babangida lamented the prevalence of thuggery and litigation in Nigerian politics, issues that transparent elections should have resolved.

He also noted the decline in voter turnout and the growing voter apathy, calling for efforts to ensure mass participation in elections.

Babangida acknowledged the progress made through recent electoral reforms but emphasized the need for continuous investment in deepening democracy and sustaining democratic ideals.
