A pro-democracy group, the Better Nigeria Movement, has urged the lawmakers in the House of Representatives to carefully choose competent leaders for the 10th National Assembly.

Emphasizing the importance of capable leadership, the group highlighted the need for the All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers to elect a “loyal and competent” party member as Speaker of the House.

The group referenced a meeting with the President, during which he expressed his commitment to allowing democracy to thrive in all branches of government.

The President firmly stated that the members-elect should select a competent Speaker amongst themselves, rejecting any attempts to impose a leader.

The Better Nigeria Movement stressed that the President desires a strong party representative who can effectively oversee the House and prevent the dominance of power-hungry politicians seeking personal interests.

The group threw its support behind Aminu Jaji, an ally of President Tinubu, as the preferred candidate for the Speakership.

They also criticized previous attempts to unilaterally select a candidate without consulting all the lawmakers-elect.
