Catholic priest fatally shot dead in Benin

Gunmen attacked Father Charles Igechi, a Catholic priest, on his way back to St. Michael College in Ikhueniro, Edo State, where he served as the vice principal.

The incident occurred almost a year after two priests were abducted and killed in the same state.

The police authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the incident, but the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City has confirmed the priest’s killing.

The Catholic Archbishop, Augustine Akubeze, expressed his condemnation of the act and informed the priests and members of the archdiocese about the tragic incident.

The remains of Father Igechi were discovered in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area, and the case has been reported to the appropriate security agency.

The archbishop called for prayers and justice while entrusting the faithful to the intercession of Our Lady of Sorrow.

The incident adds to the growing number of priests who have been abducted or killed across Nigeria in recent years.
