38 year old man in custody for fatally stabbing friend

Raphael Agu, a 38-year-old man, has been detained at the Ikoyi Custodial Centre in Lagos State on charges of murder.

He appeared before a Magistrates’ Court in Yaba, Lagos on Tuesday, facing two counts of murder.

The allegations state that on May 25, 2023, during a confrontation in the Ogudu area of the state, Agu stabbed his friend Stanley Ugo in the stomach with a knife.

The prosecution’s case reveals that a developer constructing a building near Transformer Bus Stop in Ogudu gave the defendant N15,000 to distribute among the local youth, which he did.

However, the deceased and another individual later approached Agu, claiming that he had not divided the money fairly. An argument ensued, leading to a physical fight.

During the altercation, Agu reportedly retrieved a knife and stabbed Ugo in the stomach.

The prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, informed the court that the defendant’s actions violated Section 222 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, Nigeria, in 2015, and are punishable under Section 233.

Nurudeen requested a 30-day remand for Agu pending legal advice from the Director of Legal Prosecution.

Magistrate P.E. Nwaka granted the request, ordering that Agu be held at the Ikoyi Custodial Centre.

The case file was also duplicated and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice. The court scheduled the next hearing for July 5, 2023.
