Senate blames accountant general’s office for unpaid N910bn loans

The Senate Public Accounts Committee, chaired by Senator Mathew Urhoghide, has indicted the Office of Accountant General of the Federation for failing to repay short-term loans amounting to N910 billion given to various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) from Special Funds Accounts.

The committee’s investigation, prompted by the 2017 Auditor General report, revealed that the loans remained unpaid throughout the year despite their intended short-term nature.

The Accountant General’s office defended itself by stating that letters requesting loan settlement authorization were sent to the Minister of Finance, along with a request to include repayment in the 2017 budget.

In response, the Senate has ordered the Accountant General of the Federation to recover all outstanding loans within 60 days, providing evidence of recovery to the Auditor General and Senate Public Accounts Committee.
