Indian PM promises “stringent punishment” as multi train collision kills 288

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged severe punishment for those responsible for a tragic rail accident in eastern India.

The incident, which involved two passenger trains and a goods train in Odisha state, claimed the lives of at least 288 people and left over 800 injured.

According to BBC News, rescue operations have been completed, with all trapped and injured passengers successfully retrieved. PM Modi visited the scene, expressing deep sorrow over the “painful” incident.

He also met with the victims in the hospital and assured them that his government would spare no effort in providing treatment.

The cause of the collision, described as India’s worst rail accident in this century, is still under investigation, with preliminary findings pointing to signal failure.

The collision resulted in several carriages derailing and colliding with another train traveling in the opposite direction.
