NLC set to commence nationwide strike on wednesday in response to subsidy

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has decided to initiate a nationwide strike starting next Wednesday.

The strike is a response to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited’s failure to reverse the recently increased pump price for Premium Motor Spirit (petrol).

The decision was made during an emergency National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja on Friday.

The President, Bola Tinubu, had announced the removal of fuel subsidy during his inaugural speech on Monday, May 29, 2023, stating that “subsidy is gone.”

Despite attempts by the President’s spokespersons to clarify his statement, panic buying ensued, and some filling stations raised petrol prices to as high as N600 per litre.

Following a deadlock in discussions between government representatives and NLC officials, the NLC’s national president, Joe Ajaero, announced during a press briefing after the NEC meeting that all state councils and industrial unions should begin mobilizing for the strike.
