Lagos state police command dismisses over N98,000 extortion

The Lagos State Police Command has taken action against Sgt. Ekpo Shimuyere, who served at the Sogunle Division, by dismissing him for extorting a young man of N98,000.

The dismissal was confirmed by SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the state Police Public Relations Officer, who informed journalists that the Provost Department of the command had already stripped the sergeant of his uniform.

According to reports, Sgt. Shimuyere confiscated the victim’s phone and used a Point of Sale (POS) operator to transfer N98,000 out of the young man’s bank account, leaving only N2,000 behind.

Hundeyin stated that this action was a violation of the professional ethics expected of police officers.

Upon receiving the complaint from the victim, the police command conducted an investigation. The officer initially denied the crime but was detained to prevent tampering with evidence.

The command obtained the officer’s bank statement and traced the money to the POS operator, who confirmed transferring the funds as requested by the officer.
