Keyamo: Tinubu did not remove subsidy

Festus Keyamo, the Chief Spokesman for the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign, has clarified that President Bola Tinubu did not remove fuel subsidy, contrary to the media’s portrayal.

Keyamo stated that certain media outlets are deliberately distorting the narrative to suggest that Tinubu’s government abolished subsidy, despite the fact that Tinubu himself mentioned in his inaugural speech on May 29 that subsidy no longer exists.

Keyamo explained that Tinubu’s administration inherited a situation where there was no provision for subsidy in the 2023 Appropriation Act from June 2023 onward, and the newly enacted Petroleum Industry Act does not include any provision for subsidy.

Keyamo emphasized that Tinubu acknowledged this fact in his speech and urged advocates of subsidy to explain why Tinubu should promise to reintroduce something that the law has already abolished.

Keyamo challenged those who claim to defend workers’ rights or welfare to demonstrate how the $10 billion spent on subsidy annually would not stimulate the economy and create more jobs, including a potential increase in the minimum wage that they often complain about.
