US doctor fined for discussing 10 year old’s abortion case with media

A US doctor who performed an abortion on a 10-year-old girl has been fined and reprimanded by the Indiana Medical Licensing Board for violating patient privacy.

Dr. Caitlin Bernard spoke to the media about the case, drawing attention to the impact of abortion bans. The incident occurred after a US Supreme Court ruling ended the nationwide guarantee to abortion.

The girl, who was a rape survivor, had traveled from Ohio to Indiana for the procedure due to Ohio’s restrictive abortion laws.

Pro-choice advocates, including President Joe Biden, highlighted the case as an example of the consequences of such bans.

While the doctor’s license was not suspended, she was fined $3,000 and issued a letter of reprimand.

The medical board found her in violation of patient privacy laws but not of failing to report child abuse.
