UN issues urgent hunger alert for food insecurity in Haiti, Sahel, and Sudan

Haiti, the Sahel region (Burkina Faso and Mali), and Sudan have been designated as areas of highest alert for food insecurity, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP).

The United Nations agencies, in a joint report, emphasized the need for urgent action from the international community.

These countries join existing high-alert nations including Afghanistan, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, and Yemen.

The report highlights the impact of restrictions on movement in Burkina Faso and Mali due to jihadist activities, the ongoing crisis in Haiti, and recent conflicts in Sudan.

The identified hotspots are facing or projected to face severe food shortages, requiring immediate attention.

Concerns are raised about the Sudan crisis spilling over, and the potential impact of the El Nino climatic phenomenon on vulnerable regions globally.
