New charging station for electric motorbikes targets boda boda riders in Nairobi

A Nairobi-based environmentally friendly transportation company has introduced a new charging station specifically designed for electric motorbikes, targeting “boda-boda” riders who dominate the motorcycle taxi industry.

The charging station offers riders the convenience of charging their own batteries to 80% capacity in less than an hour, all at an affordable fee.

Habib Cyril, the Roam Project Manager, explained that the aim is to reduce costs for riders, with the target being to spend less than 150 shillings (approximately one USD) for a fully charged battery that can cover around 80 kilometers.

The “Roam Hub” initiative is part of ongoing efforts to decarbonize Kenya’s transportation sector, with the project manager expressing confidence in the future of electric mobility.

The affordability and cost-effectiveness of electric bikes make them a viable option, particularly for low-income earners like boda-boda riders, who can potentially increase their earnings and improve their livelihoods.

The recent drop in inflation in Kenya further highlights the economic advantages of adopting electric mobility solutions.
