A civic group called the New Nigeria Movement has petitioned the “president-elect” Bola Tinubu, requesting an investigation into Sonny Echono, the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Fund (TETFUND), for alleged corruption and involvement in employment irregularities.
The group demands that Echono be held accountable for the funds received by TETFUND and how they were utilized during his tenure.
They suggest that failure to provide a satisfactory account should result in arrest, prosecution, and imprisonment.

The petition also calls on the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences commission (ICPC) to examine and prosecute Echono for abusing his authority and exploiting his position for personal gain, which they argue is detrimental to the quality of education and the future of Nigerian youth.
The New Nigeria Movement highlights the neglect and insufficient funding of education, particularly tertiary education, leading to labor disputes and negatively impacting students.
They claim that TETFUND, established to support scholarship in tertiary education, has been corrupted and personalized under Echono’s leadership.
