Journalist in Katsina raises safety concerns after encounter with police

Female journalist in Katsina state, Ruqayya Aliyu Jibia, has raised concerns about her safety after an encounter with the police.

In a video shared on TikTok, she explained her ordeal, which she claimed stemmed from a post she made regarding four young girls who were paraded by the police as commercial sex workers.

According to her, she quoted a section of the Nigerian Constitution suggesting that the girls should have been taken to court before being paraded.

As a result, she was summoned to the emir’s palace, where the police accused her of undermining their authority.

After being taken to court and released on bail, she went into hiding due to fears for her life. The police spokesperson, CSP Gambo Isah, dismissed her claims as baseless and stated that she had been using social media to maliciously attack the police.

He mentioned previous instances where she criticized the police’s actions. The management of Tambarin Hausa Television, where Aliyu claimed to be a reporter, issued a statement dissociating themselves from her and stating that she was not a staff member or correspondent.

The incident has sparked controversy on social media platforms, with varying opinions on the matter.
