Russia faced a series of sanctions after its military intervention in Ukraine last year, but pressure has been mounting from Kyiv and its allies for more severe measures against Moscow.
Following the recent Group of Seven (G7) summit held in Hiroshima, Japan, where leaders agreed to cut off Russia’s access to G7 technology, industrial equipment, and services supporting its military activities, Tokyo has implemented a fresh wave of sanctions.
These new Japanese sanctions, as announced by government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno, encompass several measures.
They include freezing the assets of 17 individuals and 78 groups, predominantly comprising high-ranking military officials.

The export of goods to Russian military-related organizations is now banned, along with the export of construction and engineering services to Russia.
Among the 80 organizations facing export restrictions is the Russian mobile phone operator, MegaFon.
The United States, United Kingdom, and the European Union have also recently imposed additional punishments on Moscow and pledged increased military support to Ukraine, such as supplying F-16 fighters.
Matsuno criticized the deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus, emphasizing that Japan, having experienced atomic bombings during wartime, vehemently opposes the threat and use of nuclear weapons by Russia.
