The United States (US) and United Kingdom (UK) have recently taken measures to impose visa bans on specific individuals in Nigeria who were involved in disrupting the 2023 elections.
The US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, stated that these individuals engaged in voter intimidation, manipulation of election results, and other activities that undermined the electoral process.
The UK High Commission also expressed concerns over electoral fraud, violence, and the use of inflammatory language by politicians.
Both countries emphasized their commitment to supporting democracy in Nigeria and worldwide.

The actions of some Nigerian politicians during the previous general election posed a significant threat to the country’s fledgling democracy.
Instances of intimidation, harassment, and assault on political opponents were observed, along with the manipulation and mutilation of election results.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was also criticized for not adhering to its own rules and guidelines, particularly regarding the electronic transmission of results.
These electoral malpractices tarnish Nigeria’s international reputation, leading to discrimination against Nigerian travelers and eroding faith in the electoral system.
Previous elections have resulted in violence and loss of life, emphasizing the urgency of addressing electoral fraud to preserve democracy.
