Senate advances bill to compensate victims of #EndSARS protest

A bill aimed at compensating victims of the EndSARS protest has passed its second reading in the Senate.

Sponsored by Senator Gershom Bassey of the Peoples Democratic Party from Cross River State, the bill is titled “A Bill for an Act to Amend the National Emergency Management Agency Act.”

It seeks to establish the EndSARS Victims Compensation Fund.

Senator Bassey highlighted that following the nationwide EndSARS protests in October 2020, judicial panels of inquiry were set up to address the demands of the protesters and provide compensation for verified victims.

The panels and the Senate Joint Committee on EndSARS revealed instances of protester fatalities and the destruction of both public and private property by rampaging hoodlums who infiltrated the peaceful protests, looting and vandalizing valuable assets.

However, the implementation of compensation recommendations from the panels and committees has been disheartening.

The bill’s passage and subsequent implementation of the judicial panel’s recommendations would bring relief to the victims who have suffered from the injuries inflicted upon them during the protests.

Senator Bassey urged his colleagues to support the amendment bill and provide hope for the victims of the 2020 nationwide EndSARS protest.
