Nigerian doctor freed from abductors after dispute over ransom offer ends in violent encounter

Dr. Etito Obadiah, a medical doctor at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Makurdi, Benue State, has shared his harrowing experience after being kidnapped and held captive for about 10 days.

He was rescued by the police along with nine other victims on Monday.

According to Dr. Obadiah, he and his driver were abducted while en route to Taraba State. Initially, he thought he could make a quick trip and return to attend to his patients at the hospital.

However, they ended up lost in Zaki-Biam and sought directions. It was there that they encountered armed kidnappers on motorcycles.

The abductors, demanding a ransom of N40 million, assaulted Dr. Obadiah when he proposed a reduced amount of N5 million. He was hit on the head with a gun as a result.

After being blindfolded, Dr. Obadiah and his driver were taken to a remote location, enduring beatings and threats. Other captives, including women who had been held for weeks, were also present.

The situation seemed dire until gunshots rang out at 4 a.m., signaling the arrival of the police. With the help of the officers, the victims were rescued and had to trek over 10 kilometers to safety.

The Commissioner of Police, Julius Alawari, confirmed that the police tracked down the kidnappers’ hideout in Gaya village, Benue State.
