Iran appoints ambassador to Saudi Arabia

Iran has officially named its ambassador to Saudi Arabia, marking a significant development in the restoration of diplomatic ties between the two regional rivals.

Alireza Enayati, who previously served as Iran’s ambassador to Kuwait and held key positions in the foreign ministry, has been appointed as the new envoy.

While there has been no immediate confirmation from Iran’s foreign ministry, state media reported the appointment.

The reconciliation agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia was signed unexpectedly in China on March 10, after years of strained relations.

In 2016, Saudi Arabia cut ties with Iran following attacks on its embassy in Tehran and consulate in Mashhad during protests over the execution of a Shiite cleric.

The recent reconciliation was preceded by rounds of dialogue in Iraq and Oman, as both countries sought to mend their differences.

Iran and Saudi Arabia had supported opposing factions in various Middle Eastern conflicts, such as Yemen, where they backed different sides.
