Former minister Femi Fani-Kayode faces arrest as court issues bench warrant for his absence

Femi Fani-Kayode, a former Minister of Aviation, is facing the possibility of an arrest warrant after repeatedly failing to appear at his trial, according to an Ikeja Special Offences Court.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had filed a 12-count charge against Fani-Kayode, accusing him of presenting a false medical report to a federal high court in Ikoyi.

The anti-graft agency alleged that Fani-Kayode engaged the services of Ogieva Oziegbe to produce the purported fraudulent medical report.

Despite pleading not guilty during his arraignment on December 17, 2021, Fani-Kayode has consistently been absent from subsequent court proceedings.

His counsel, Wale Balogun, had initially cited health issues and disputes with the Department of State Services (DSS) and police as reasons for his absence.

On the recent court date, Fani-Kayode was once again not present, and his representative claimed he still had health concerns.

The presiding judge, Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe, expressed disappointment with the lack of diligent prosecution and warned that a bench warrant would be issued if Fani-Kayode did not appear at the next adjourned date.

The case has been adjourned until November 7 for the continuation of the trial.
