The Enugu State Police Command has announced the arrest of four individuals involved in ATM card-swapping fraud. The suspects, consisting of three males and one female aged between 18 and 36, were apprehended on May 6, 2023, at approximately 4:30 pm. The operation was conducted by the Hawk Tactical Squad of the State Command in collaboration with troops from the Nigerian Air Force Enugu, at Emene behind Emenite. According to DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the Command's spokesperson, the fraudsters defrauded a 63-year-old man of N495,000. The suspects stole the victim's ATM card and Personal Identification Number (PIN) by deceiving him while pretending to assist with a withdrawal at a commercial bank ATM along Ogui Road, Enugu. Subsequently, they swiftly withdrew a total of N495,000 from the victim's account. During interrogation, the suspects confessed to the crime, revealing that they had conducted several other ATM card-swapping frauds within the Enugu metropolis. The police recovered four different ATMs, including the victim's card, from the suspects. The suspects were arraigned in court on Tuesday and remanded in Enugu Custodial Centre. The trial Magistrate adjourned the case to June 7, 2023, for further proceedings and ordered that the case file be sent to the Attorney General for legal advice through the Director of Public Prosecution, Ministry of Justice, Enugu State.
