Buhari rejects proposed 65 year retirement age for workers – Festus Keyamo

The Minister of State for Labour, Employment and Productivity, Festus Keyamo, has dismissed the notion that President Muhammadu Buhari would approve the proposed extension of the retirement age for Nigerian workers to 65 years.

In an interview in Abuja, Keyamo explained the reason behind the president’s decision.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), led by its National President, Joe Ajaero, had called for an upward revision of the retirement age for civil servants during the 2023 Workers’ Day celebrations in Abuja.

Ajaero also emphasized the need for salary adjustments to bridge the income disparity between different segments of the public service.

However, Keyamo clarified that any changes to the retirement age would be addressed by the incoming administration, as the process could not be completed before President Buhari’s tenure ends.

Therefore, the decision will fall under the purview of the next government.
