NAFDAC highlights high rejection rates of Nigerian food exports, calls for enhanced collaboration

During the official commissioning of the new NAFDAC office complex at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Mojisola Adeyeye, revealed that more than 70 percent of food exports from Nigeria are rejected by other countries.

This issue has led to significant financial losses for exporters and the country as a whole.

However, Adeyeye expressed optimism that this trend could be reversed through enhanced collaboration between NAFDAC and other government agencies at the ports.

Adeyeye emphasized the importance of ensuring that exported goods meet the regulatory requirements and quality standards of the importing countries before they are even packaged.

She stated that currently, over 70 percent of products leaving Nigerian ports face rejection, resulting in a double loss for exporters and the country considering the resources invested in exporting the goods.

Adeyeye stressed the crucial role of NAFDAC’s presence at the ports and land borders in fulfilling its mandate to protect public health and ensure the quality of imports.

She commended the Nigeria Customs Service and the police for their collaboration with NAFDAC, highlighting their support in investigations, enforcement, and operations.
