Labour party controversy: Allegations of threats and collusion shake leadership and spark investigations

The leadership of the Labour Party has urged the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Security to investigate Abayomi Arabambi, the former National Publicity Secretary of the party and spokesperson of the Lamidi Apapa faction.

Arabambi had alleged that the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was threatening his life. He accused Kennedy Ahanotu, the party’s National Youth Leader, of sending him threatening messages prior to an assault on Apapa outside the court premises.

During the incident, supporters loyal to National Chairman Julius Abure obstructed journalists from interviewing Apapa and chanted derogatory remarks.

To restore order, the police had to intervene and protect Apapa from the protesters.

Arabambi expressed his anger, claiming that the attack could not have occurred without the collusion and knowledge of Obi.

Apapa also implicated Obi and Abure, alleging that they had sent thugs to assault him at the tribunal.

Arabambi appeared on Arise TV and revealed that he had received a threatening text message warning him not to appear in court.

In response, Kennedy Ahanotu and the Labour Party’s National Secretary, Alhaji Umar Farouk, issued a joint statement refuting the allegations and vowing to report Arabambi to the DSS and police for questioning.

They demanded that Arabambi provide evidence of the alleged threats.

Arabambi remained undeterred by the party’s petition, stating that he was unafraid and planned to hold a press conference to present his evidence.

He reiterated that his life had been threatened in court and accused Ahanotu and Obi of orchestrating the attack. Arabambi also called for the DSS and police to place Obi and Abure under house arrest, alleging that they planned to disrupt an upcoming inauguration.

While Arabambi claimed to have received intelligence from loyalists within the party, the veracity of his claims could not be independently confirmed.
