Nigeria’s U-20 national team, the Flying Eagles, started their campaign in the Argentina 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup with a hard-fought victory.
They had to come from behind to secure a 2-1 win against the Dominican Republic.
The match took place at the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza. In the 23rd minute, the Dominican Republic took the lead through Edison Azcona’s converted penalty kick, marking a historic moment for their country’s participation in a global football tournament.

However, Nigeria quickly responded and equalized eight minutes later when Guillermo Rosario inadvertently scored an own goal from a corner kick.
The Flying Eagles completed their comeback in the 71st minute when Samson Lawal capitalized on a defensive mistake to give his team the lead.
The victory earned Nigeria three points and propelled them to the top of Group D, pending the outcome of the other group match between Brazil and Italy.
