Seun Kuti’s lawyers accuse police of disobeying court order and withholding case file

Lawyers representing Seun Kuti, the embattled Afrobeat singer, have raised allegations against the police, claiming that they are disregarding a court order by withholding the artiste’s case file.

In a statement released on Friday, the legal team called upon Simon Lough, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, to comply with the magistrate court’s directive to forward the case file to the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions for legal guidance.

Seun Kuti, son of the late Afrobeats legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has been held in police custody since May 15 on charges of assaulting a police officer.

Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, the lead counsel for Seun, accused the police of turning the situation into a spectacle instead of following a straightforward process.

Despite willingly submitting himself to the police, Seun Kuti has been subjected to unnecessary transfers between different police stations in Lagos, without any indication of when he will be formally charged.

The lead counsel emphasized that Seun Kuti is patiently waiting to face the charges and provide his defense.

The legal team expects Deputy Commissioner Lough, who is also a lawyer and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, to adhere to the magistrate court’s order and send the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions for evaluation, potential charges, and prosecution in a court of law.

Addressing a previous accusation made by Lough regarding a “media trial,” Olumide-Fusika clarified that Seun Kuti’s legal team has not engaged in any such activities and has solely focused on defending their client within the confines of the law.
