Mass exodus: Sudanese refugees seek safety in Ethiopia amidst escalating conflict

Every day, hundreds of individuals seeking refuge from the ongoing conflict in Sudan are crossing the main border post at Metema in western Ethiopia.

Between April 21st and May 7th alone, approximately 15,000 people from sixty different countries have made the perilous journey.

Among them is Redin Abdela Ahmed, a student from Khartoum, who acknowledges the temporary nature of their situation and hopes for a better life.

Ahmed highlights that despite the lack of information provided by the authorities, they are making efforts to support the refugees by providing essential items such as food, water, and medical treatment for any ailments or injuries.

Both the authorities and aid agencies are working tirelessly to ensure the refugees’ well-being.

This includes providing necessary provisions and arranging transportation for those continuing their journey within Ethiopia, as well as offering shelter for those opting to stay in Metema.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) released data indicating that at least 843,130 people in Sudan have been displaced, with around 259,000 seeking refuge in neighboring countries.

To address the growing crisis, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has established a refugee shelter located approximately six kilometers from the border post.

The shelter has already accommodated around 400 Sudanese and Eritrean refugees, offering basic wooden and canvas tents with limited supplies. Currently, each tent provides shelter for about a dozen people, shielding them from the scorching sun and providing a place to rest.
