Governor Matawalle accuses EFCC chairman of requesting $2 million bribe

Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle has alleged that the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, demanded a bribe of $2 million from him.

Matawalle made these claims during an interview with BBC Hausa. The accusations add to the growing tensions between Matawalle and the EFCC boss.

In response to Matawalle’s call for his resignation, Bawa asserted his innocence and urged the governor to submit any evidence of corruption to the appropriate authorities.

Matawalle questioned the selective focus on governors, stating that the federal government also has a treasury that should be scrutinized by the EFCC.

Matawalle asserted that he possessed evidence to support his claim of bribery, and if Bawa were to leave his position, numerous individuals would come forward with evidence of bribes they allegedly gave him.

The governor stated that he rejected Bawa’s request for a $2 million bribe and recalled the specific meeting where the demand was made.

The rift between Matawalle and Bawa has intensified, with the governor challenging the EFCC chairman’s integrity and calling for transparency in investigating corruption at both the state and federal levels.
