Breaking barriers: Blind football takes off in South Sudan

Blind football is gaining traction in South Sudan as the Juba Boys FC participates in the country’s inaugural blind football league.

Despite initial doubts about the feasibility of visually-impaired individuals playing football, the league organizers swiftly mobilized young visually-impaired individuals and introduced a system for blind football.

Head coach Simon Madol Akol emphasizes that blind football not only provides new opportunities for visually-impaired youngsters but also challenges discrimination against them.

The sport offers a platform for communication and camaraderie between visually-impaired and sighted players, breaking down barriers and dispelling negative stereotypes.

Team captain Mubarak Joseph Hilary asserts that blind football has been a game-changer, opening doors to possibilities previously considered impossible.

With over 80 players currently involved in Juba, the league aims to expand its reach across the country, fostering inclusivity and empowerment for visually-impaired individuals.
