Seun Kuti to face court arraignment for assaulting policeman, spends night in custody

The Lagos State Police Command has reiterated its intention to take Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti to court for assaulting a police officer on duty in Lagos.

The incident, captured in a viral video, led to Kuti turning himself in to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) at Panti, Yaba, accompanied by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika and a lawyer from Falana and Falana Chambers, Femi Akinyemi.

Following Kuti’s surrender, he was handcuffed and detained, spending the night in custody.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer in Lagos, confirmed that Kuti would be arraigned once the investigation is concluded.

The trouble began when a video surfaced showing Kuti assaulting a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.

The short clip depicted Kuti pushing and slapping the officer while exchanging heated words.

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, ordered Kuti’s arrest in response to the incident.

However, it was later revealed that Kuti had apologized to the officer and offered him ₦12,000 to repair his damaged vehicle.

The officer had reportedly followed Kuti to his residence in Ikeja, where the reconciliation took place.

The apology and monetary compensation were confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Hundeyin.

Condemnation of the assault video on social media prompted the Police Service Commission to issue a statement demanding Kuti’s prosecution as a deterrent to others.

Meanwhile, Olumide-Fusika criticized the police for subjecting his client to a media trial, highlighting the violation of laws regarding the parade of suspects and the illegal handcuffing of Kuti during his transfer to the Panti Lagos facility.
