NMDPRA urges diesel consumers to embrace gas to reduce carbon emissions

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has urged consumers of diesel to adopt the use of gas as an alternative to reduce carbon emissions.

The call was made by Farouk Ahmed, the Chief Executive of NMDPRA, during a Stakeholders Engagement on Gas Utilisation in Nigeria held in Kano.

Ahmed emphasized the urgent need for large diesel consumers to embrace the use of gas, which has been designated as Nigeria’s transition fuel.

The government has implemented various initiatives and policy frameworks, such as the natural gas expansion program and the decade gas expansion program, to promote the adoption of gas.

Ahmed highlighted the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) as a catalyst for industry growth, with recently gazetted regulations unlocking significant opportunities and paving the way for energy security.

The stakeholders’ engagement aimed to raise awareness and advocate for compliance among industry operators to ensure safer and sustainable facilities.

Shu’aibu Samuel, the Northwest Regional Coordinator of NMDPRA, explained that the event aimed to encourage industry operators to shift from diesel to gas due to its cost-effectiveness, environmental friendliness, and lower carbon emissions.
